Let's face it. I've been in a creative
slump. And its due to a lack of confidence. Obviously the writer in
me is holding up the artist in me, and that's just not fair. The
writer needs practice, and the artist needs to draw, but the creator
is going nuts because he feels the need to be a perfectionist, which
leads to a lot of excuses and procrastinating. Artwork is like a
muscle, and the less you use it, the weaker you get, and I think I've
already started to see it. I went through this before during 2004,
and I just can't let this happen again. Also, I have a bit of an
reputation as a fanservice artist, which I wouldn't mind changing a
bit. Fanservice has it's time and place, but not all the damn time.*
And it doesn't help that even since I bought a Kindle Fire, I've been
catching up on a LOT of my comic book reading, and I'm seeing what I
could be doing, should be doing and what ISN'T being done.
I was talking to my friend James about
this earlier tonight. And we came up with a brilliant suggestion. The
Firecracker comic will be fleshed out a bit, but I need more practice
writing and I need to keep drawing. I know what I want to do with it,
because I'm planning on it being a long term project, but I need to
make sure I'm up for it. And we figured out how. This is going to
sound drastic, but in the end, it works perfectly.
Effective immediately, ALL projects
(but one) are canceled and no commissions are being taken. I got a
new fan project I'm going to do here, and when that's done, then I
may do Firecracker, but for right now, this new fan project is the
only thing on my table. (As well as a lettering gig, but that's
besides the point.) I've got a good feeling about it and if you
remember what I said about things in comics that just isn't being
done... Well, I have a point I feel I need to prove to the comic book
industry and I'm gonna do it with this. Going to use this project to
clear the path, and build up both my art and writing skills, so when
the time comes to do Firecracker (or whatever I end up doing) I'll be
ready for it.
More about this next time. In the
meanwhile, I have to do some research.
*I got no problem with a sexy outfit on
female characters, but you got to be freakin' fair and put them on
the men too. If the female Star Sapphires have to fly around the
universe wearing something consisting of not much more than a skimpy
swimsuit and some pasties, then so should the male Star Sapphires.
(Also, Power Girl's new costume blows. Just sayin'.)

something a freind suggested to me is 24 hour comics, those guys draw a whole comic in 24 hours, i'm not suggesting you do that, but I am suggesting you bash one out as if you were doing it for that, with all the roughness and bruises along the way and then clearly say, i drew this in only this much time lol i think i'm going to have a go at doing it.... perhaps a comic produced in 1 week for example (not counting printing)
